A native of England, Gavin began his career in London, winning five major photographic awards and gaining the coveted titles of Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) and Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photography (FBIPP) and was also featured in a BBC television documentary on Professional Photography. Moving to New York in 1981, Gavin continued to work in advertising and industrial photography shooting a wide range of subjects including cars, computers and cosmetics both on location and in the studio. A commission from the National Gallery of Art to Photograph Turkish art for the exhibition The Age of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent followed by a commission from the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art to photograph strip weaving in Mali and the Ivory Coast launched a second career, which has to date contributed to over 50 books based on the distinguished collections of the Metropolitan Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Winterthur Museum, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and the White House among others including many private collections. His most recent books are: The American Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence, Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana Volume 1 and 2, George Washington’s Mt. Vernon, The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs, The Seven Bridges Collection, the first fifteen years, Connecticut Needlework 1740-1840 and Quilts, Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum. |
